Biography David Swanger, long-time professor of education and creative writing at UCSC, was born in New Jersey on August 1st, 1940, the son of Saul and Pearl (Ginevsky) Swanger. Biography Raymond Clevie Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon on May 25, 1938. In 1941 his family moved to Yakima, where Carver grew up, graduating from Yakima High School in 1956. On June 7, 1957, he married 16 year old Maryann Burk, who had just graduated from high school. In December of 1957 their first child, daughter Christine LaRae, was born.
